This April 23-26, we gathered again in Ottawa to advocate for our abducted children. Nine of us were able to attend in person — in some cases crossing the country to be there — and we brought statements, questions, and stories from other parents and families around the country who have lost children to parental abduction. We represent approximately 50 abducted Canadian children, and too few of us have seen a resolution to our cases.

Return Our Children Home Canada connects and supports parents of internationally abducted children — it is our most regular activity. But in a country as large as Canada, it is rare to be able to do this in person. During our 2022 conference we organized an in-person vigil on Parliament Hill, centering our children as the primary victims.

While the Return Our Children Home Canada conference was focused on gathering parents in Canada’s capital, our work is implicitly international. Our children were abducted across an international boundary. Our familiar legal system is complicated and failure-prone enough — but each of us now also needs to learn about one or even two more legal systems, and all the relevant international agreements that they might share.
The only hope we have in navigating this complexity is partnership and communication.
